Tuākana Tēina Kaiārahi was created from a simple belief that positive, consistent relationships can make a real difference in the lives of tamariki and rangatahi.
What began as a small mentoring service supporting a handful of young people each week has grown over more than five years into a wider kaupapa working alongside kura, whānau and communities across Te Tai Tokerau.
TTK now provides one to one mentoring, school based support, group programmes, Tū Toa, life skills and leadership opportunities, while remaining grounded in the same approach that shaped the mahi from the beginning: showing up, building genuine relationships and walking alongside tamariki and rangatahi.
At TTK, relationships come first. Tamariki and rangatahi are more likely to engage, challenge themselves and grow when they feel known, respected and supported by someone who consistently shows up for them.
Our approach is grounded in the tuākana tēina relationship, where learning, guidance and growth happen through connection and shared experience. We work alongside tamariki and rangatahi rather than simply delivering a programme to them.
Our mahi is also informed by Te Whare Tapa Whā, recognising that wellbeing is connected across taha tinana, taha hinengaro, taha whānau and taha wairua. This allows us to look beyond behaviour or immediate challenges and support the whole person.
Manaakitanga
Care, respect and uplifting the mana of others.
Whanaungatanga
Building meaningful relationships through connection and belonging.
Kotahitanga
Working together with shared purpose.
Tika
Doing what is right and acting with integrity.
Pono
Being genuine, honest and true in our relationships and mahi.
TTK is delivered by a small team of kaimahi who bring their own strengths, experiences and relationships to the mahi. Our team works across kura and community settings, providing consistent support and positive role models for tamariki and rangatahi.
Our kaimahi bring experience in mentoring, social work, sport, community engagement and working alongside tamariki and rangatahi with a wide range of strengths and needs.
What connects our team is a shared commitment to being present, building trust and creating positive experiences that tamariki and rangatahi can carry with them beyond their time with TTK.
